People should not fear their governments; governments should fear their people.

  • Game creatures

Review: Braveheart for iOS. In this action role-playing game, you play as Richard, a knight sent by King Wilhelm to retrieve the Holy Grail. But the task is not an easy one: to save the day, you’ll have to confront the Great Dragon which guards the prize. [MacCentral]

That doesn’t sound so bad. Surely everyone knows that the most ferocious beast guarding the Holy Grail is the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog.

  • Historical note

I just noticed that the current Evil Empire has now been “liberating” Afghanistan for almost two months longer than the previous Evil Empire.

  • Apparently not

I came across this amusing old post which contained the following quote:

OK, if you look five years down the road you can see that Passport is going to own a large chunk of the world’s Web sites. Already if you go to http://msdn.microsoft.com you’ll need Passport to download software and do other things.

Now, imagine a world where every Web site is like that.

It is pretty hard to imagine now, nine years later, because I have no idea what “Passport” was.

Snack-Packed Turtle Smugglers’ Motives Unclear [LAist]

The smugglers, 39-year-old Atsushi Yamagami, and 49-year-old Norihide Ushirozako, of Osaka, Japan have been charged with “illegally importing wildlife into the United States,” for which they could be sentenced to “a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison” if convicted.

No mention of how much stolen money was spent on this year or more long “investigation.”

For comparison, the thug who murdered Oscar Grant in the middle of a crowded subway station in Oakland on New Year’s Day in 2009 was sentenced to a year and a half in prison. But of course the murderer was wearing a clown suit, and that makes all the difference.

  • Some perspective

Did you know that six people were murdered in a brutal attack just a few days ago? The answer is almost certainly “no,” because the attack I’m referring to happened in a foreign country, and the only U.S. Government officials involved were the ones who ordered it and carried it out.

  • Some much-needed common sense

    John Green Gets It.

“This shouldn’t happen in this country, or anywhere else, but in a free society, we’re going to be subject to people like this. I prefer this to the alternative.”

John Green, father of nine-year-old Christina Green, who was killed in Saturday’s Tucson shootings.

After all the partisan, self-serving, asinine commentary of the last two days . . . bless John Green. What remarkable perspective, composure, and clear-thinking in the face of a grief that few of us can imagine. He doesn’t assign blame beyond the person who deserves it. There’s no call for new laws or new restrictions. No, “Who can we fault for not preventing this?” Just obvious grief, fond memories of his daughter, and an understanding that terrible things sometimes happen to good people. It’s enough to restore one’s faith in humanity.

    [The Agitator]

I realize that the slime who rushed to wave the bloody shirt while it was still dripping are quite incapable of shame, but I hope that at least some of those who jumped on their bandwagon will read this and feel ashamed.

  • At least he’s qualified for the job

Our New Terrorist-Tainted House Homeland Security Committee Chief.

Rep. Peter King (R-NY) is the new chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.

This dude knows all about terrorism, since he has spent decades doing big-time fundraising for the Irish Republican Army.

Muckraker/hell-raiser/freedom-fighter Will Grigg has an excellent piece on King’s hypocrisy on LewRockwell.com today.

    [BOVARD]

It’s definitely appropriate, given the blatant hypocrisy of the Evil Empire, to appoint some guy who used to be Osama bin Laden for white people to this position. After all, this is the same country that conquered Iraq using terrorism as a pretext, and then appointed a terrorist as puppet ruler.

  • Historical ignorance

    Oligarch Booed.

When the second-ranking Koch brother, David, took the stage at the Brooklyn Academy of Music to discuss his support for the Nutcracker, he was booed. Not for his taste in ballet. David is the co-funder of Beltway “libertarianism,” regime Tea Partyism, the Republican party, etc.

UPDATE And see this from EconomicPolicyJournal.com.

    [LewRockwell.com Blog]

The people at LewRockwell.com have long had a rather bizarre obsession, bordering on derangement, with the Koch brothers. Apparently now they’ve convinced themselves David Koch is a vampire or something, if he was around to co-found the Republican Party in 1854!
